Bringing together home-based child care providers from around the country, the <a href=\"https:\/\/homegrownchildcare.org\/policy-matters-home-based-providers-take-our-case-to-the-statehouse\/\">Home Grown Policy Workgroup<\/a> is<strong> <\/strong>a gathering place for home-based provider leaders to reflect on and share feedback about updates to federal and state legislation that will impact their caregiving work. Among the group\u2019s first set of provider leaders was Maritza Manrique. She was passionate about advocacy and was deeply involved in influencing policy positions around child care and other areas that impacted those around her. She also served as the chapter president at <strong>SEIU<\/strong> Local 509. Maritza was a vital contributor to the Home Grown Policy Workgroup and often brought updates from Boston about new bills and legislation that local advocates were pushing for.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Much of Maritza\u2019s advocacy has been documented. When House bill<a href=\"https:\/\/malegislature.gov\/Bills\/193\/HD2794\"> HD.2794<\/a> and Senate bill<a href=\"https:\/\/malegislature.gov\/Bills\/193\/SD667\"> SD.667<\/a> were introduced in the Massachusetts legislature to advance affordable, accessible, high-quality early education and child care, <a href=\"https:\/\/commonstartma.org\/news\/renewed-push-for-affordable-high-quality-early-education-and-child-care-kicks-off-with-filing-of-bills-to-advance-common-start-agenda\">Maritza shared her support in this quote:<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cEvery day, family child care providers across Massachusetts go above and beyond to provide quality care for families in our communities. We are dedicated professionals who remain committed to supporting children in learning and thriving, but our work continues to be underfunded and unappreciated. Child care providers are resourceful and we have made the impossible happen \u2013 but we shouldn\u2019t have to. It\u2019s time the Commonwealth establishes a permanent funding system that invests in our work and addresses the child care workforce crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"512\" height=\"384\" src=\"https:\/\/homegrownchildcare.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/maritza1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3918\" srcset=\"https:\/\/homegrownchildcare.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/maritza1.jpg 512w, https:\/\/homegrownchildcare.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/maritza1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>A photo of Maritza advocating at the Capitol in Boston, shared with the Home Grown Policy Workgroup<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Janna Rodriguez, family child care provider, owner and operator of The Innovative Daycare Corp in Freeport, New York, and Policy Workgroup member, said about Maritza: \u201cMaritza Manrique was a radiant light in the child care movement\u2014a proud Latina provider from Massachusetts whose voice carried the hopes and struggles of so many Spanish-speaking providers across this country. Even from New York, I felt the impact of her courage, her grace, and her fierce advocacy for those whose first language wasn\u2019t English. Today, we honor her legacy, her love for her community, and the powerful light she leaves behind in all of us who continue this fight.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In every Policy Workgroup meeting, Maritza imparted an inspirational message to the group \u2013 spoken in Spanish, the language of her heart \u2013 that encouraged the group to keep fighting for the recognition and resources that home-based child care providers deserve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Home Grown\u2019s policy work is richer because of the many things we have learned from Maritza and we continue to be buoyed by her wise words.
